Familial trauma\, including intimate partner violence and child abuse\, neglect\, and household dysfunction\, is highly prevalent and represents a critical contextual variable influencing behavior across development. Nearly 63% of U.S. adults report at least one adverse childhood experience\, with prevalence estimates reaching up to 84% among autistic individuals (Aslam et al.\, 2024; Reuben et al.\, 2021). Consequently\, behavior analysts are likely to encounter trauma‑related variables across applied\, experimental\, and academic settings. \nEffective application of trauma‑informed care (TIC) within behavior analysis requires a functional understanding of behavior that accounts for trauma‑related learning histories. Gaps in formal training and mentorship limit many behavior analysts’ ability to identify trauma‑related variables\, increasing the risk of incomplete assessment and ineffective or potentially harmful intervention. \nThe goal of this event is to enhance behavior analysts’ understanding of trauma responses as learned behaviors selected over time in the context of overwhelming aversive interpersonal experiences. Learners will leave with an increased awareness of how trauma‑related variables may influence behavior\, consistent with BACB ethical standards for client welfare\, professional competence\, supervision\, and harm reduction. General guidelines will be suggested for practicing with cultural humility in the context of familial trauma. The presentation will close with suggestions for behavior analysts to contribute to a more trauma-informed world through research\, interdisciplinary collaboration\, and active allyship. \n\nLearning Objectives:\nBy the end of this event\, participants should be able to: \n\nDiscriminate characteristics of a culturally humble\, trauma-informed functional assessment framework.\nAnalyze responses to trauma-related stimuli in terms of respondent and operant conditioning processes.\nIdentify functional-contextual variables potentially influencing contingencies of reinforcement/punishment in the context of familial trauma.\nDistinguish trauma-informed caregiver coaching behaviors in the context of familial trauma.\nIdentify at least 3 ethical considerations related to scope of competence when practicing ABA in the context of familial trauma.\n\nPresenter Bio\nMichelle Sereno\, Ph.D.\, BCBA-D earned her master’s degree from the University of Nevada\, Reno and her doctorate from the Chicago School. She currently serves as Regional Senior Behavior Analyst for a community-based foster care agency. Doctor Sereno’s primary research area is problematic bias in relation to familial trauma. In the current presentation\, I will first provide an overview of the difference between synchronous reinforcement schedules and other more common schedules of reinforcement. Next\, I will provide an overview of research on synchronous reinforcement schedules. Then\, I will discuss recent translational and applied research from my lab on the efficacy of and preference for synchronous reinforcement schedules. Specifically\, I will discuss two translational studies comparing synchronous schedules to one in which reinforcer delivery occurred at the end of the session. In addition\, I will discuss several applied studies where we used synchronous schedules to increase appropriate behavior among individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (e.g.\, exercising\, wearing face coverings during the pandemic\, and promoting tolerance of health-related routines). Furthermore\, I will discuss recent research on ways to sustain the effects of synchronous schedules after they are removed\, as well as the application of synchronous schedules in group contexts. Finally\, I will conclude with suggestions for important areas for future research on synchronous reinforcement schedules. \n\nLearning Objectives:\nBy the end of this event\, participants should be able to: \n\nIdentify examples and non-examples of synchronous schedules\nIdentify different applications of synchronous reinforcement schedules.\nIdentify the potential mechanisms by which synchronous schedules are effective for behavior change.\n\nPresenter Bio: \nDr. Claudia Dozier is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Applied Behavioral Science at the University of Kansas. Dr. Dozier’s areas of research include assessment\, treatment\, and prevention of behavior disorders\, as well as schedules of reinforcement\, and preference for and reinforcer efficacy of social interaction. Dr. Dozier has served as faculty supervisor and Co-Director of the Edna A. Hill Child Development Center at the University of Kansas. In addition\, she and her graduate students provide consultation services to a large residential program serving adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In conjunction with this program\, they conduct community-engaged research to address important challenges and barriers in service provision for this population. Dr. Dozier has served as an associate editor for the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis and serves on the editorial boards of various behavioral journals. In 2020\, Dr. Dozier received the Steeples Service to Kansans Award for her service to the people of Kansas as a purposeful extension of her teaching and research. In this shifting policy landscape\, ethical obligations are not separate from leadership responsibilities—they are the foundation of them. For experienced Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) and established leaders\, ethical decision-making must actively shape how organizations interpret medical necessity\, structure supervision\, ensure documentation integrity\, and respond to external pressures from regulators and payers. \nThis session examines how core ethical principles intersect with real-world challenges\, including ongoing federal audits of Medicaid ABA programs by the Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (HHS OIG)\, fraud\, waste\, and abuse concerns\, and changing coverage policies.  \nBeyond compliance\, the session emphasizes ethical leadership at scale: fostering organizational cultures of transparency\, advancing documentation practices that are both accurate and meaningful\, and guiding teams through complex decisions that prioritize client outcomes while remaining defensible under scrutiny. She began working in behavior analysis in 2001 and earned her master’s degree in applied behavior analysis from Auburn University in 2004. Her experience spans clinical operations\, compliance\, regulatory affairs\, and public policy. \nMariel currently serves as the presiding officer of the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) Behavior Analyst Advisory Board (BAAB). She is a former Chair of the Metrocare Services Public Advisory Committee and Past President of the Texas Association for Behavior Analysis Public Policy Group (TxABA PPG). She also serves as a subject matter expert for the Policy Council on Children and Families\, focusing on the Autism Services benefit within Texas Medicaid\, and works closely with federal and state regulatory agencies and legislative offices. \nMariel received the BlueSprig CEO Award in 2020 for her leadership in preparing the organization to transition to telehealth during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022\, she was part of the TxABA PPG team recognized with the Autism Law Summit Implementation Award. These challenges can undermine evidence-based practices\, erode trust in professionals\, and contribute to the proliferation of pseudoscientific alternatives. This presentation will explore the multifaceted impact of misinformation and disinformation on the field of ABA\, including their influence on policy\, funding\, and the dissemination of effective interventions. Using recent examples\, the talk will examine how false narratives about ABA circulate on social media and other platforms\, often amplifying misconceptions about the therapy’s goals\, methods\, and outcomes. Strategies for combating these issues will be discussed\, including the importance of coordinated\, clear\, transparent communication with stakeholders\, proactive public engagement\, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Additionally\, this presentation will highlight the role of behavior analysts in promoting media literacy and advocating for science-based practices. By fostering critical thinking and equipping practitioners with tools to address misinformation\, the field can better safeguard its reputation and continue providing effective\, ethical care to individuals with autism. Previously\, he was an associate professor at the University of Missouri (MU)\, where he also served as Chair of the Department of Health Psychology\, Founding Director of the MU Graduate Programs in Applied Behavior Analysis\, and Director of the Applied Behavioral Intervention Service at the MU Thompson Center for Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disorders. Dr. Kahng has held faculty positions in the Department of Behavioral Psychology and worked as a senior behavior analyst on the Neurobehavioral Unit at the Kennedy Krieger Institute. Additionally\, he was an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. \nDr. Kahng earned his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Kalamazoo College and his Ph.D. in behavior analysis from the University of Florida. He has served as an Associate Editor and on the Board of Editors for the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis. He is currently on the Board of Editors for Behavioral Intervention and the Review Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders. \nA New Jersey Licensed Behavior Analyst and Board Certified Behavior Analyst – Doctoral\, Dr. Kahng is a Fellow of the Association for Behavior Analysis International\, a Trustee of the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies\, and a Trustee for the Autism MVP Foundation. He has been the President of the Board of Directors of the Behavior Analyst Certification Board\, the Applied Representative to the Executive Council of the Association for Behavior Analysis International\, a member of the Scientific Council of the Organization for Autism Research\, and a Past President of the New Jersey Association for Behavior Analysis. \nDr. Kahng received the 2003 B.F. Skinner New Researcher Award from Division 25 of the American Psychological Association. His research and clinical work focus on assessing and treating complex problem behaviors in individuals with developmental disabilities. After completing of his Masters’s program\, Kubina taught special education in private schools specializing in post-acute brain trauma rehabilitation for three years. During his doctoral program\, Kubina worked as a graduate teaching assistant for the Great Lakes Regional Resource Center\, a federally funded information dissemination and training center serving the Great Lake states. Currently\, Kubina teaches courses on methods for teaching reading\, behavior analysis\, and single-case design. Whether presenting to researchers\, influencing stakeholders (e.g.\, staff\, clients\, parents\, other clinicians)\, or disseminating behavior analysis to the public\, the ability to communicate clearly and coherently directly affects understanding\, buy-in\, and follow-through. This talk will summarize relevant behavior-analytic studies and research-backed content for designing and delivering professional presentations. Attendees will learn how to (1) set clear presentation objectives\, (2) tailor content to the needs\, histories\, and contingencies unique to different audiences\, (3) design slide decks\, graphs\, and visuals intentionally for impact\, and (4) use evidence-based delivery behaviors that promote fluency\, structure\, and engagement. Participants will leave with research-grounded techniques and tools to apply immediately. \n\nLearning Objectives:\nBy the end of this event\, participants should be able to: \n\nIdentify key public speaking behaviors that they can incorporate into their own presentations.\nIdentify the steps in awareness training for reducing speech disfluencies and select which awareness training procedure that they can practice independently.\nComplete a scoping document for an upcoming presentation by identifying their target audience\, selecting relevant content\, and choosing engagement strategies.\n\nPresenter Bio: \nDr. Matthew Laske is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Behavior Analysis at the University of North Texas and Director of the Organization and Communication Sciences Laboratory. Matthew obtained his Ph.D. in Behavioral Psychology at the University of Kansas under the advisement of Dr. Florence DiGennaro Reed. He obtained his M.A. in Industrial-Organizational Psychology and Human Resource Management at Appalachian State University with Dr. Tim Ludwig. Dr. Laske’s research program centers on organizational behavior\, communication sciences\, and occupational safety\, with a particular emphasis on public speaking\, dissemination\, and applied workplace interventions. He has authored a book (The Science and Best Practices of Behavioral Safety)\, peer-reviewed articles\, and book chapters.
